What is LIFI technology?

26/02/2019
  • Soon you'll have it in the soup: what is LiFi and how does it work?

  • Many are the technological inventions that have revolutionized our day to day in a brutal way, does anyone remember how to get to unknown places without GPS? Without going any further, I myself write this post from my smartphone connected to the Internet through WiFi, tools that we have fully incorporated into our lives and that have been a turning point -though we do not think much about it- in the way we relate with the environment ... as also happens with the LED.

  • Today we want to talk about a wireless connection technology that does not use microwaves for data transmission as it happens with WiFi, but uses light sources: the Light Fideliy, also called LiFi.
Attentive, because it is 100 times faster than Wi-Fi and is considered as the new solution that aims to unseat it. From now on, light will not only be used to decorate and see, but also to connect to the internet, how? turning light sources such as light bulbs into millions of access points that would keep us connected to everything.
The LiFi also promises to be a very economical, sustainable and fully efficient option, based entirely on LED technology.
  • Advantage:

We have already mentioned some of them: cheaper technology (up to 10 times more than WiFi), fast, efficient ... It adapts to any light source, which can make it the most standard and globalized solution worldwide.

    Disadvantages:

That we know the light still does not go through the walls, so the receiver and the emitting device must be in the same room, although the positive point is that hacking by a rogue neighbor is more difficult.

It does not work without light.

And it presents some problems of stability that are improving, after all it is a new technology, with a lot of margin and route, and innumerable applications.
  • When?

As we say, it is a technology in development. It is in the testing phase both in the laboratory and in a real environment, but a lot of money and resources are being invested in making it grow so that one day it can become commercial. Philips has already announced that it has an eye on the LiFi and, in fact, is the first global lighting company to offer LiFi-compatible luminaires. So much so that it is already being tested in the real estate Icade of Paris, in a real office environment.

Can you imagine having access to the internet with LiFi through the headlight of your car or using the light sources of the airplanes to connect to the internet? Can you imagine the jump that can be on the Internet of things with millions of devices connected at instant speed? We are excited about the idea.
